Potato and tomato production projected to fall by 4-5 pc in 2021-22: government data

According to the data from the ministry of agriculture, the production of potatoes and tomatoes decreased by 4-5 percent during the crop year that ended in July 2022, while the production of onion remained higher than the previous year.

Releasing the third preliminary estimate of horticultural crop production, the ministry said potato production is bound to be lower by five percent at 53.39 million tonnes in 2021-22, against 56.17 million tonnes in the previous year.

Similarly, tomato production is estimated to have declined by four percent to 20.33 million tonnes against 21.18 million tonnes in the comparable period.

However, onion production is pegged higher at 31.27 million tonnes during the 2021-22 crop year against 26.64 million tonnes in the previous year.

The production of total vegetables is projected to be higher at 204.84 million tons against 200.45 million tons in the said period.

Fruit production is also estimated to be higher at 107.24 million tonnes during 2021-22 crop year against 102.48 million tonnes in the previous year.

The total production of horticultural crops is projected to increase by 2.31 percent at 342.33 million tonnes in 2021-22 against 334.60 million tonnes in the previous year, the data showed.

The government publishes production estimates at different stages of plant growth and harvest. A total of four assessments are published before the final one.
