Our art reporters’ top picks for the week ahead. October 27 to November 2: A trio of Halloween-themed events

ASTROCOLOR

Where: Capital Ballroom, 858 Yates St.

Why: Astrocolor has an uncanny ability to shape its music to suit any room and occasion, which bodes well for its upcoming Halloween performance. Although the band’s most recent recording, heavenFull of summer vibes, the band (with support from bandy and DJs from the start of Sport Mode) will be sporting their outfits, no doubt.

Victoria’s 12-legged groove machine was recently named Instrumentalist of the Year by the Western Canadian Music Awards, so expect nothing less than expert musicianship, well-timed grooves and the potential to go all-out crazy at any moment.

Music that beats the night

Where: Royal Theatre, 805 Broughton St.

When: Saturday, October 29 (7:30 p.m.), and Sunday, October 30 (2:30 p.m.)

Why: The Victoria Symphony’s latest offering is geared toward the spooky season, a program that includes music designed to chill audience members.

Pops conductor Sean O’Loughlin is a perfect fit for such a program: Music That Goes Bump in the Night features excerpts from the Hall-of-Fame score. the jaw — Creepy as Creepy Gets — by noted film composer John Williams, whose work O’Loughlin has directed on several occasions.

A pair of performances this weekend will also feature Camille Saint-Saëns dance Macabre, a tone poem for orchestra written by the French composer in 1874 and often used in all media. Centered around a legend, where Death appears every year at midnight on Halloween, it will anchor the Victoria Symphony event with atmospheric aplomb.

Langford Fall Food Truck Festival

Where: Langford Station, 720 Station Ave.

When: Saturday, October 29 (2 pm-8 pm), and Sunday, October 30 (11 am-3 pm)

Admission: for free

Why: Festival season still has some legs, as evidenced by the Langford Fall Food Truck Festival. Downtown Langford’s Cultural District is purpose-built for such events, making Saturday evenings/Sunday afternoons attractive for music, food and Halloween-themed activities.

With food lineups ranging from Bird & Basket (rice bowls and wraps) and L’Authentic (poutine and burgers) to Candy Time Victoria (carnival desserts) and Hazel’s ice cream, there’s no shortage of options. And with a tent-covered site, attendees will be able to enjoy music by The Banks Brothers, Noah & The Flood and others along with a dry dancefloor.

Non-perishable donations are also being accepted through the Goldstream Food Bank
