If you haven’t updated to Nvidia’s latest graphics driver yet, you might want to hold off: Nvidia has confirmed that there’s a bug in the driver that causes Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. (opens in a new tab) crashes
Word of the issue initially came to our attention via Beenox, the lead studio on the PC version of Modern Warfare 2. “We’ve noticed some stability issues with the latest NVIDIA drivers 526.47 in Call of Duty #MWII,” the studio. tweeted “Currently we would suggest that you keep the 516.59, or 522.25 drivers.

Nvidia later confirmed a problem in an email sent to PC Gamer. “Yes, there is a bug reported for this game and we are working on a warm-up,” wrote a representative. “This is specifically why our latest Game Ready Driver was not promoted or recommended for this title in the first place.”
Ironically, several people are posting about problems on Reddit (opens in a new tab) say they updated to the latest drivers to address crash issues. One redditor, for example, describes Steam requiring a lengthy download after a crash (opens in a new tab) before it will allow the game to launch again (even though it doesn’t actually download anything), a problem I’ve run into a few times. Updating graphics drivers is a standard early step when it comes to troubleshooting, however in this case it seems to only make the problem worse.
Nvidia hasn’t provided a time frame for when the hotfix will be available, but the current Game Ready Driver is still listed as 526.47—the broken one—so right now the best thing to do is just stick with what you’ve got, even if it’s a little wonky . If you have already updated and want to redo, instructions for doing so can be found at nvidia.com (opens in a new tab).
