By Craig Page: Fans are beginning to wonder if Jermall Charlo will return to the ring this year to defend his WBC middleweight title.
The undefeated Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) was off the grid for the last 16 months since his life and death fight in what should be an easy defense against Juan Macias Montiel in June 2021.
Some people believe Jermall is 32 years old waiting for Canelo’s big payday next year and he doesn’t want to risk a loss before then.
If the great Charlo waits long enough, the World Boxing Council will order him to defend his rights Carlos Adams (22-1, 17 KOs), who looked amazing earlier this month in the destruction of Montiel by third round knockout in the WBC 160-lb title eliminator.
If the idea is for Charlo to wait for Canelo’s payday, Adames could immediately cancel his plans because the WBC will not let Jermall sit on the middleweight title without defending him for a long time.
Mike Tyson tried to get Jermall to call David Benavidez earlier this year, but he won’t. Tyson concluded that Jermall was “intimidated” by the ‘Mexican Monster’ Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs), and many boxing fans on social media agreed with him.
The way Jermall looks at Montiel, he will be fodder for the likes of David Benavidez, David Morrell Jr, Chris Eubank Jr, Demetrius Andrade, and Zhanibek Alimjanuly.
All of Jermall’s inactivity over the past two years has taken something out of his game, leaving him with a shell of the fighter he was earlier in his career when he was beating the likes of Julian ‘J-Rock’ Williams. Austin Trout, and Cornelius Bundrage.

Jermall Charlo: “They know who they are,” Jermall said humbly in response. “We called Canelo from five or six years ago.”
Mike Tyson: “Then you fight the next best man, the ‘Mexican Monster.’
Jermall: “Who?”
Tyson: “Benavidez.”
Jermall:He is not a Mexican monster. He has nothing to offer.“
Tyson: “You’re scared.”
