With the announcement of the IDA Documentary Awards shortlists today, a handful of awards season frontrunners are starting to emerge.
All That BreathsDirected by Shaunak Sen, All beauty and bloodshedFrom Laura Poitras, and the area, from Alex Pritz, made the feature’s 25-film shortlist, a day after receiving a Gotham Award nomination. Three more strong contenders – Sara Dosar fire of loveBrett Morgen’s David Bowie doc Munez daydreamsand Daniel Roher’s Navalny Also made the IDA shortlist (these three missed out on Gotham nods, but made it with a Best Feature nomination last week for the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards). The shortlisted films will have a maximum of 10 nominations for Best Documentary Feature and a maximum of 10 nominations for Best Short Documentary. Nominees for these and several additional categories, including Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best TV Documentary or Mini-Series, Best Music Documentary and Best Stand-alone Audio Documentary, will be announced on November 11.m The IDA Documentary Awards ceremony took place on December 10 at the Paramount Theater at Paramount Studios in Hollywood.

As has been the case in recent years, the IDA’s features have made room for a significant number of international documentaries that might otherwise be overlooked by awards voters. Acknowledged A house made of splintersa film set in Ukraine directed by Danish filmmaker Simon Lereng Wilmont; Nellie and Nadine by Swedish director Magnus Garten; No easy way homefrom South Sudanese director Akuol de Mabior; Sanson and meFrom Mexican-born, US-based director Rodrigo Reyes, with films in Portugal, Spain, Canada, Afghanistan, Libya, Israel and more.
The IDA said in a statement, “This year’s IDA Documentary Awards shortlist and nominees were selected by an independent committee of 310 documentary makers, curators, critics and industry experts from 52 countries. “IDA received a total of 806 submissions across all categories, 40 percent of which were internationally produced or co-produced projects from 86 countries.”
Crystal Sotomayor and Eddie Hustleby lead the IDA’s award competition team. “We are proud to make the history of the IDA Documentary Awards with the highest number of submissions and the most international entries,” they said. “We have the most globally diverse jury in the awards’ history and, for the first time, submissions require closed captioning as part of IDA’s accessibility priority.”
Highlights from IDA’s short documentary shortlist include: Mink!Directed by Ben Proudfoot, who has been nominated for an Oscar the past two years, won earlier this year The Queen of Basketball. Nuisance bearDirected by Gabriela Osio Vanden and Jacques Weissman – winner of more than a dozen international awards to date – also earned a spot on the IDA Shorts shortlist.

“The 38th IDA Documentary Awards continue the tradition of celebrating the work of outstanding nonfiction media creators,” observed IDA Executive Director Rick Perez. “This year’s Best Feature Documentary and Best Short Documentary shortlists reflect a growing awareness that multiple perspectives are necessary to better reflect the form’s global popularity and to recognize the global community of artists working in the field.”
Of the shortlisted features and short documentaries, six are distributed by The New Yorker, four by HBO Documentary Films/HBO Max, four by Netflix, three by The New York Times Op-Docs and two by NEON, POV/POV Shorts. , and National Geographic.
