By Jim Calfa: Shakur Stevenson says he wants to fight Vasyl Lomachenko in his first fight at heavyweight. Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) has other plans, he wants to take on the victory of the undisputed champion Devin Haney vs. George Kambosos Jr on October 16th.
Former three-division world champion Lomachenko headlines next month against Jamaine Ortiz (16-0-1, 8 KOs) on October 29th on ESPN at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Top Rank needs to pick an opponent for Stevenson’s debut at 135 because Lomachenko will be busy challenging the winner of Haney-Kambosos II.
If Lomachenko wins, there is a possibility that Shakur will challenge him for four belts at 135. It would be a good idea for Stevenson to fight at or under his belt in weight before taking on Lomachenko because this will be a tough fight. .
Interestingly, Shakur is cool with the idea of fighting Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz in his 135-lb debut. There aren’t many other fighters in the heavyweight division that compare to Cruz.
It’s not realistic for Stevenson to fight Ryan Garcia or Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis because the promoters of those two fighters are very specific about who they match up with.
They weren’t going to let Ryan and Tank Davis fight a man as crafty as Stevenson.
Some good options for Stevenson’s debut at 135:
- Joseph ‘Jojo’ Diaz
- Michel Rivera
- Jeremiah Nakathila
- Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero
- William Zepeda
- Brock Jarvis
- Denys Berinchyk
- Frank Martin
- Keyshawn Davis
“Lomachenko, I think me and Loma can be a great fight,“Shakur Stevenson told the DAZN Boxing Show about his preference for the first fight at 135.
“Make it happen in the next one or two fights; I’m ready. It is clear as day; Their minds are already raised on that,” said Shakur.
“They know I’m ready, they won’t dress me, they won’t take me to the cakewalk, they know I’m ready.”
“I will [take the fight against Isaac Cruz]but he’s just going to let his fans know what they already know,” Shakur said when asked about his thoughts on fighting Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz in his first fight at heavyweight.
“I will box myself; he can’t do anything with me.
“Lomachenko loves those belts; His attention didn’t really attract my attention,” Shakur added.
