By Dan Ambrose: Promoter Oscar De La Hoya said Canelo Alvarez “he will never fight” David Benavidez because he is “talented” and “young.”

What is sad about the fact that it is Canelo (58-2-2, 39 KOs) holding the undisputed Super middleweight crown, while Benavidez is the WBC interim 168-lb champion who is close to Alvarez’s belt that sanctioning body.

Suppose Canelo chooses to retain his WBC 168-lb title. In that case, he will need to defend Benavidez at some point unless the World Boxing Organization makes him a Franchise Champion, which would allow the Mexican star to hang up the gun forever.

“Benavidez vs. Canelo: Canelo will never fight him. He is young and talented,” said Oscar De La Hoya on social media.

If Canelo doesn’t decide to never fight Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs), he still needs to fight other quality fighters to keep his popularity where it is now. He can’t fight many people’s faults like he did before he was read Dmitry Bivol last May.

Benavidez, 25, is in a difficult situation because he has put in all this work to become Canelo’s opponent and the interim WBC 168-lb, yet there is nothing he can do to force the fight.

Without the WBC ordering Canelo to fight Benavidez, there is nothing he can do to make it happen.

Also, if the WBC orders Canelo to fight Benavidez, he can always vacate the belt like he did when the agency made Gennadiy Golovkin mandatory back in 2016. That would be a nightmare for the WBC.

If you are a WBC, you have to worry about ordering the Canelo vs. Benavidez because if the Mexican star gets angry with this move, he can give up the belt. Benavidez will take it down, obviously, but the WBC will be left with the least popular champion.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes before the WBC finally orders Canelo to defend Benavidez. I mean, they did it at some point because Benavidez was the WBC’s mandatory belt for Canelo for over a year, and now he’s the reigning champion after beating David Lemieux last May.

Canelo recently revealed that he is suffering from a left hamstring injury, and that he intends to undergo surgery to repair the problem. The surgery could keep Canelo out of the ring until September 2023.
