By Brian Witter: Daniel Dubois will defend his WBA heavyweight title against Lucas ‘Big Daddy’ Browne in November, according to Dubois’ trainer Shane McGuigan.
They have long hoped that Dillian Whyte will be the next opponent for the 25-year-old Dubois (18-1, 17 KOs), but it is believed that he will wait for the big payday fight with Anthony Joshua.
The 43-year-old ‘Big Daddy’ Browne (31-3, 27 KOs) is coming off a first-round knockout victory over Junior Fa last June, and has won the last two fights. Browne is ranked #11 with the WBA, and has rekindled his career with his recent wins.
The fans wanted to see Dubois take on one of the top contenders in the heavyweight division, but that didn’t happen for whatever reason.
“Well, he’s had a couple of losses, but he just knocked Junior Fa out in a round. So that’s a good win coming out,” Shane McGuigan told Secondsout about defending WBA heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois. and Lucas ‘Big Daddy’ Browne, who turned 43 in November.
“It’s a very heavy burden. You have to try to get the right names and stuff, but everyone wants to wait for the big fights. I’ll let Mark Bowers and Frank design the opponent, and we’ll just prepare for it.
“He needs some tests and challenges. It’s a great penalty kicker, Lucas Browne, but in terms of durability and shot retention and rounding, I’m not sure we’ll get that. There will be a shot, however.
“We expected this to happen. I’m not sure what happened there,” said McGuigan when asked what happened to the Dillian Whyte fight with Dubois.
“Maybe he wants to wait for the AJ fight. I think he might think AJ is considering the Fury fight, but they’re in a tough time getting that fight. If it doesn’t come, AJ will want to fight in December.
“He [Whyte] he probably thinks there’s more money in AJ’s fight. That is, unfortunately, it all boils down to money. It would be a great name for Daniel, especially at this stage of his career.
“I think it’s possible,” McGuigan said when asked if Joshua vs. Dubois will probably next year. “I don’t know how much AJ will like it.”
