As COVID-19 and modern technological advances have changed the way we work, so much more Property 500 companies spend millions—if not billions—of dollars to help their employees get the education they need to develop their careers. In fact, 69% of U.S. adults who are working or have plans to return to work say they are more likely to leave their current job for an employer that offers skills upgrading opportunities, according to a June 2021 poll conducted by Amazon and Gallup.

In the fall of 2021, Amazon announced a $1.2 billion investment in its hourly employees, which includes funding tuition fees for its more than 750,000 U.S. operations workers. The initiative, which is part of Amazon’s Career Choices program, began in January 2022—and the company on Monday Thursday announced an expansion for the program.

Now, Amazon is adding partnerships with more than 140 colleges and universities to provide free college education to its hourly employees—taking the number of Amazon schools it can attend debt-free to 180. Amazon, the second-largest U.S.-based retailer, also revealed that the program it will now be available to employees who have been with the company for only 90 days.

“We really listen to our colleagues,” Tammy Thieman, global leader of Career Choice Programs, said Property. “And our partners have told us they want to be able to expand their Career Choice offerings and achieve career success—and also looking ahead to what they can do with it to grow both in the company and in other opportunities. outside the company.”

How Career Options Work

Hourly employees who have worked with the company for three months can apply to the schools they are interested in through the school’s Career Choice program. Qualifications for admission vary from school to school, but many providers require a GED or high school diploma to enroll in a bachelor’s degree program.

“We really want to help partners achieve career success,” said Thieman. “We truly believe that anyone who comes to Amazon should be able to build their career with us—and that is whether they stay with us or go elsewhere.”

Amazon employees have access to the school’s online catalog to choose from—which includes both online and in-person options. Employees can also attend classes at any of the 110 Career Choice locations across the US. Career Choice classrooms are located in Amazon facilities so employees only need to commute once each day to work and attend classes. In total, Amazon employees have access to more than 180 schools through the expanded Career Choice program.

“We really think that it’s really exciting for partners to be able to have options because it makes it easier to learn,” said Thieman. “It works with their life [and] how they learn.”

The Career Choice Program differs from other skills upgrading and tuition reimbursement programs in that Amazon pays 100% of tuition fees upfront, which “removes financial barriers,” says Thieman. Amazon is also working on a pilot training program that will help employees choose the right program.

What Amazon is looking for in education partners

Career Choice programs are popular with adult students—such as those who never went to college and went straight to work or those who earned a few credits but then entered the workforce. For that reason, Amazon has a selective screening process to select their partner schools.

Strong partner schools are schools that understand adult learners and offer support services for employees from choosing the right program to getting academic assistance to finally achieving a career placement.

“We’ve really seen who partners can really help us achieve better outcomes for our associates—and by results we mean not just course completion, but how we help them take the next step in their careers and land. their next job is based on the education and skills they have learned,” said Thieman.
