The tower defense genre is a difficult field to develop games without having some spectacular idea to stand out. Most of the known elites have dominated the field since the early days of the internet, starting out as flash games or console originals.
And while these elites have managed to adapt to the ever-evolving gaming landscape and are household names, some indie games have managed to push past the elites and hold their own and become some of the best tower defense games the PC has. to propose
8/8 GemCraft Series
GemCraft as a series has been around since 2008 in the early lightning days of the internet. Its core gameplay is to create powerful gems by combining weaker gems to destroy your enemy. The more mana you possess, the easier things will be, but a lot of management is required to get to that point.
The first three flash game entries are some of the most difficult tower defense games but at the same time very rewarding. The two that come later on Steam are fun for veterans and new players alike as they add additional gameplay features like talisman fragments, burial chambers, and gem enhancement spells. This, combined with difficulty based on performance, makes for a great series for everyone.
7/8 Orcs Must Die series
In most tower defense games, you’ll find your character supporting towers as they defeat enemies along a set path. However, Orcs Must Die is known as a more combat-oriented tower defense game where the towers support your character while you slaughter orcs.
It takes a decent amount of strategy to get through each level; you will start over and fail several times before you get it right. It’s often easier to play with multiple people, so different directions and angles are covered. However, there is certainly no need to have fun. Upgrading defenses and weapons is done after you complete a round, making the challenge of preparing before you fight even more enjoyable.
6/8 Kingdom Series
The Kingdom series boasts a simple yet unique gameplay style that no other tower defense game has managed to accomplish so far. While your typical tower defense game is played in the third person or looking at a map from above, Kingdom decides to let you play as a character in a 2D side scroller.
It’s a beautiful indie series that sees you as a king or queen trying to rebuild a kingdom they once lost. You run around recruiting people to join your cause, and as you survive each night, more resources are needed to keep your kingdom running. Managing these resources is difficult because you can only interact so much, but if you care, Kingdom is a rewarding and enjoyable game.
5/8 Creeper World
Most tower defense games narratively offer a simple explanation of why you’re fighting the enemy, which usually falls under the same idea of defeating the enemy using whatever is necessary. However, Creeper World takes a different approach, narratively and gameplay-wise, where you’re not trying to defeat the enemy but trying to get away from an unkillable force known as the Creeper.
Your goal in each world you visit is to build a base to get enough energy from the surrounding area while holding off the invading Creeper so you can portal to another new world. The concept is simple, but with a dynamic map design and a variety of weapons and buildings at your disposal, this game provides countless hours of entertainment as you plan how to survive.
4/8 Dungeon Warfare
There’s something satisfying about mowing down enemies with traps you’ve built after confining those enemies to a path you’ve designed. The main difference between Dungeon Warfare and classic tower defense games is that you defend not with towers but only with traps.
You play the role of a dungeon master who needs to protect his carefully constructed dungeon from greedy heroes, setting traps to ensure the downfall of your enemies. Whether it’s spike traps, barricades or ropes that impale your enemies and drag them into a pit, Dungeon Warfare offers a uniquely challenging and fun experience.
3/8 Bloons TD 6
The most iconic flash game developed in 2007 by Ninja Kiwi, Bloons Tower Defense, has also become one of the staples for a good tower defense game. The most recent and popular entry is Bloons TD 6, which boasts a variety of towers, maps and challenging game modes for new and veteran players to enjoy.
With this installment, players can play with up to four people in one game and upgrade a tower’s ability by using those towers during gameplay. There is no right way to play the game, as there are constant updates to the game to fix balance issues and promote variety in each playstyle. In addition to that, unique hero towers can be selected along with regular towers that can give certain gains to your units or friends, making the game even more fun.
2/8 Dungeon Defenders
Dungeon Defenders is an incredibly unique tower defense and action RPG game that once used to rival Orcs Must Die in the tower defense community. Unlike any other tower defense, there are four main classes you can choose from, each with their own set of towers that serve a distinct purpose related to the character’s personality.
Dungeon Defenders shines with its cooperative gameplay, where different people can combine towers to create better defenses against more difficult monsters while fighting through well-designed levels. And, if you’re having fun, there’s plenty of DLC available for purchase that extends the campaign and even brings more classes. But be careful; the other games in this series are poor recreations of the first, so be sure to pick the original.
1/8 Plants Vs Zombies GOTY
In the early 2000s, the developer PopCap Games was one of the best and most prominent development studios for PC and mobile games. Some of their significant hits are Bejeweled, Peggle, Zuma, and Plants vs Zombies. This first game inspired many modern tower defenses with its unique gameplay, fun art style, and phenomenal music by Laura Shigihara.
Your goal is to defend your lawn from a horde of zombies, which becomes increasingly difficult every day. After completing a certain amount of waves, the scenery around you changes from night to a pool and even a rooftop. At the same time, zombies will also change dramatically to counter your evolving defenses and environment. It’s a fun and challenging game with a terribly satisfying ending that still holds true today.
