After being requested by fans countless times, the amazing spin-off of the Age of Empires series from 2002, Age of Mythology, is finally getting a modernized definitive edition. Xbox and World’s Edge announced Age of Mythology: Retold as part of the series’ 25th anniversary stream, revealing that the remastered version will be available on PC and PC Game Pass.

Age of Mythology is next to receive the remaster treatment as developer World’s Edge currently shifts its focus to older games in the Age of Empires series rather than developing new entries. A concrete release date for Age of Mythology has not yet been revealed. World’s Edge has released a short trailer for the definitive edition of the 2002 original, reflecting its stunning theme that draws inspiration from Greek, Egyptian and Norse mythology. However, the development team is not ready to show any gameplay at this time.

It’s safe to assume that if Age of Mythology: Retold gets the same treatment as Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition, players can expect new expansions, gameplay features, and improved visuals from the classic RTS. In this context, the devs have assured that the remastered version will feature updated graphics and gameplay. “We know the Age of Mythology community has been eagerly awaiting a Definitive Edition, and we will deliver.” Studio Head at World’s Edge, Michael Mann, wrote on the Xbox Wire blog.

Age of Mythology has already received a remaster treatment with an extended edition that added Steamworks integration and improved features. Originally released as a mythological spin-off of the beloved RTS series back in 2002, the iconic game was updated with several expansions that brought in Atlanteans and Chinese as two separate civilizations. What sets Age of Mythology apart from the other AOE games is that it draws inspiration from fantasy stories instead of historical events. It promises extended gameplay of mythological gods as campaign protagonists, such as Thor, Zeus, Ra and Poseidon.

Players would like to see some notable changes in construction, resource management, diplomacy or army creation that could directly affect gameplay. More information about Age of Mythology: Retold will be provided at a later date. In other Age of Empires news, World’s Edge has revealed that Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition and Age of Empire 4 will be coming to Xbox next year.
