This week, monitor maker Philips introduced a new brand called Evnia, which the company hopes will restore its position in the lucrative PC gaming accessories market.
Philips is a well-established and respected manufacturer of computer monitors, although it previously did not have a gaming-specific brand. The closest Philips has come is with AOC, a Philips brand that makes some of the best gaming monitors out there, but that makes monitors for several different audiences, not just gamers.
Evnia is designed from the ground up to be a brand for gamers, but it definitely avoids the typical, aggressive gaming style that has dominated the PC gaming space for the last decade. Rather than building a gaming monitor that looks like a Decepticon, Evnia has a more modern looking aesthetic, with predominantly white bezels with Ambiglow lighting along the back to create an aura lighting effect.
In addition to the range of gaming monitors, there are also Evnia PC gaming headsets, gaming keyboards and gaming mice, as well as a gaming mat. The first Evnia model to go on sale, the Philips Evnia 34M2C7600MV, will feature an ultrawide QHD panel (3,440 x 1,440p), with HDR 1400 and a 165Hz refresh rate. It will be available from December and will have an MSRP of €2,069 (around $2,050 / £1,810 / AU$3,240).
While admittedly expensive, this is one of the highest-quality offerings in Evnia’s product stack, with less expensive monitors expected to go on sale from mid-January.
Can Philips win converts with its more accessible design?
It’s no secret that PC gaming has a particular style associated with it, for better or for worse. For at least a decade, gaming PCs and gaming laptops in general have been defined by how much RGB lighting it has and how much it can resemble a stealth bomber or sports car.
Too much of something for so long is bound to lead to consumers looking for a change, and there’s no getting around the fact that the gaming aesthetic hasn’t changed that much in a very long time.
Philips isn’t completely throwing everything out the window with its Evnia brand (it will still have RGB lighting, though), but it’s offering something new, design-wise, and that’s rarely seen in PC gaming.
Will it be enough to win players over? It’s too early to tell, but if there was ever a way to get back into the PC gaming space with a new product line, a refreshed design is certainly a great place to start.
