By Brian Webber: Former heavyweight champion Teofimo Lopez has agreed to travel to the UK to challenge WBO 140-lb champion Josh Taylor for his title should the two win their next bout, according to Bob Arum.
Before the Taylor-Lopez fight can happen, Taylor (19-0, 13 KOs) must win against Jack Catterall in a rematch on February 4th, while Teofimo (17-1, 13 KOs) needs to take care of business with Jose Pedraza on. December 10th at Madison Square Garden in New York.
The question is whether Taylor, 31, will be willing to stay at featherweight for a further fight to defend his WBO 140-lb title against Teofimo after a rematch with Catterall in February.
Taylor is having a hard time making the 140-lb limit, and wants to move up to 147 to make it easier for himself to make weight. Not only would it be easier for Taylor to make weight at welterweight, but there is also more opportunity for a well-paying fight.
Teofimo will not be an easy fight for Taylor at 140, especially if he avoids making weight like he did in his fight with Catterall.
It’s too early to tell if the Taylor-Teofimo fight will happen because both are struggling. Teofimo could lose to Pedraza (29-4-1, 14 KOs) on December 10th.
“We are promoting Josh Taylor. We are not promoting Jack Catterall, but we think Josh Taylor can win the fight with Jack Catterall, I will stay with Josh,” said Bob Arum to Fighthype.
“I think Teofimo Lopez and Josh Taylor at 140 pounds will be awesome, and it will be a great fight in the UK.
“I spoke briefly with Teofimo and his father, and they would be willing to travel over to the UK to fight Josh Taylor. First, he had to fight Pedraza, and Pedraza was hard to get out of.
“He is an experienced player, and he has worked very, very well, so we will see.
“I want to see the strength and star power he has when he’s in the lightweight division,” Arum said when asked what he wants to see from Teofimo in the Dec. 10 fight against Jose Pedraza.
“He was a big fan because of the way he fought and how entertaining he was. So we’ll see how he does on December 10 at Madison Square Garden,” said Arum.
