To meet the changing demands of American drivers, compact pickups are back and they’ve evolved. Truck models include the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and more Ford Ranger has increased in size, as well as their prices.

Smaller compact pickups can now fill the gap left by their larger counterparts in the market. The first cars to fill this void are the Ford Maverick and the Hyundai Santa Cruz.

Ford’s newest pickup, the 2022 Maverick, resurrects its somewhat forgotten small car name from the 1970s. The Ford Maverick is a compact pickup that sits below the Ranger and F-150 in the company’s portfolio. Ford based it on the Ford Escape small SUV (which is also the architecture for the Bronco Sport).

Despite the Ford Maverick’s excellent towing capacity, it differs from the traditional frame construction of the Ranger and F-150.

In addition, it is cheaper and smaller than its older brothers. As a result, the Maverick is a wise choice if you want the versatility of a pickup truck, but don’t need all the features that a midsize or full-size car provides.

Let’s take a look at the 2022 Ford Maverick.

Ford Maverick has an attractive interior

The Ford Maverick interior is practical and attractive. Two-tone chairs made of durable fabric have contrasting stitching.

There are leather options, including a dark gray design with caramel accents. The dashboard has a stone look that imitates a solid tabletop. Even tall people have plenty of headroom and legroom in the front and back rows.

The five-person Maverick cabin has plenty of clever storage space in both the front and rear rows. Ford made the door armrests so that a one-liter water bottle could stand upright without touching them. You can place a tablet or a notebook in the capacious door pockets.

There are two sizeable storage compartments that can be accessed by folding down the rear seats. They can be used as a place to store tiny items out of sight and are large enough for some sports equipment. The battery in hybrid versions occupies one of the storage spaces.

There’s also FITS (Ford Integrated Fastening System) if you need more specialized storage options. There is also a storage compartment on the back of the center console.

This is compatible with the optional accessory pack, which includes cup holders, a double food hook and a cord organizer. You can use this in the future to host your own DIY 3D printed products.

With Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the 8-inch Ford Maverick touchscreen is well equipped until 2022. FordPass Connect with built-in modem and up to 10 Wi-Fi devices are standard.

The Ford Maverick is the most fuel-efficient pickup truck on the market right now

The Maverick is the first pickup truck in America with a standard hybrid powertrain, Ford was quick to point out. The base car has a hybrid system that combines an electric motor and a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 191 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque.

Ford has set a target of 40 mpg city and 500 miles of range with this CVT automatic and front-wheel drive combination. They actually beat it with the Maverick’s official EPA rating of 42 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. As a result, it is the most economical pickup truck on the market.

However, it is not the fastest; 0 to 60 mph takes 7.6 seconds. Ford has got you covered if you want a little more power and capability.

You can also get the Maverick with a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 that produces 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and is available with AWD and FWD. The EPA rates fuel efficiency at 22/29 mpg for all-wheel drive and 23/30 mpg for front-wheel drive.

The Ford Maverick cannot tow a large load

The 2022 Ford Maverick was not designed to tow a large load. Hybrid models have a below-average tow rating of 2,000 pounds.

The pickup’s towing capacity increases to 4,000 pounds when Ford adds a turbocharged engine, though some drivers may still want a truck with more power. The Ford Ranger is a better alternative because it has a tow rating of 7,500 pounds.

Unfortunately, the 2022 Ford Maverick does not offer a hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive

Those who live in America’s Snow Belt may find four-wheel drive a must. Unfortunately, front-wheel drive is standard on every Maverick with a hybrid.

Buyers must choose a turbocharged truck engine to have all-wheel drive. And even though the Maverick’s turbocharged engine packs a ton of power, some consumers end up liking the hybrid powertrain because of the significant fuel economy.
