One of the most popular midsize trucks is the 2022 Ford Ranger. Although it is not an F-150, many are interested and have questions about it. A common question is whether it is available with a V6 engine. If you’re buying a Ranger for its pickup power, you’ll want as much as possible. Unfortunately, Ford only gave us one engine to choose from, but is it a V6 or something else?
2022 Ford Ranger Engines
There is only one Ford Ranger engine for the 2022 model year. The standard option is a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. According to Car and Driver, the Ranger XL’s speed and handling are surprisingly good with this setup. Also, rear-wheel drive is standard, as is 8.4 inches of ground clearance. All-wheel drive is available, however, and those versions increase ground clearance to 8.9 inches.
As a result, there is no V6 engine for the 2022 Ford Ranger. Ford’s midsize truck lacks an updated engine, but that could change in some markets in 2023. Does the Ranger fall behind its competition by not offering a V6 option? For example, the most popular truck in the segment, the Toyota Tacoma, has a standard 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, but a 3.5-liter V6 is available as an option.
Will the 2023 Ford Ranger have a V6?
The good news is that the 2023 Ford Ranger will likely have a V6 engine available. The bad news is that the automaker will close paid access to the new Ranger Raptor. According to KBB, the Raptor variant will use a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces 392 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. There’s even a diesel engine set to debut under Ranger hoods, but it won’t be coming to America.
Additionally, Car and Driver prices the Ranger Raptor from $44,500. Fortunately, the mid-size SUV will be very well equipped. For example, a unique long-travel suspension, 33-inch all-terrain tires, Fox Live Valve shock absorbers, a more muscular frame, skid plates, anti-lag, off-road modes and much more.
However, those not interested in a higher price and off-road capability won’t be able to buy a V6-equipped Ranger. Compared to the competition, this is not too surprising. Many trucks come with a more powerful engine only if buyers get the off-road or top trim levels. However, the Toyota Tacoma has an optional V6 even for the base model.
Should you buy the 2022 Ford Ranger?

The Ranger is a great choice if you’re interested in a mid-size truck. However, you won’t be able to find one with a V6 engine under the hood. Still, the Ranger is surprisingly powerful, even with its turbocharged four-cylinder engine. More specifically, Ford’s midsize truck can tow 7,500 pounds using the optional tow package. In addition, payload capacity is 1,860 pounds, which is average for the class.
Ford’s revived midsize truck is for those who want a utility truck without the pain of a giant F-150. With great ride quality, plenty of power and class-average towing power, you won’t miss the V6 engine for sure. Also, if off-roading and a more powerful engine are required, the 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor will arrive sometime in 2023.
