By Sam Volz: Vasyl Lomachenko says his #1 target after his fight with Jamaine Ortiz on Saturday is Devin Haney because he has “four” heavyweight belts.
Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) is coming off a long layoff of ten months since his last fight, and he is taking on ‘The Technician’ this Saturday, October 29th, on ESPN+ at Madison Square Garden in New York .
Loma feels that the Ortiz fight will be like one of his best fights because of the technical skills that will be on display.
A win for the 26-year-old Ortiz could block two-time Olympic gold medalist Lomachenko in a fight with 135-lb champion Haney (26-0, 15 KOs) next, assuming he’s ready to face him.
We still don’t know if Haney will accept the fight or not. Bob Arum’s top promoter said after his win over George Kambosos Jr on October 15th that he wanted a fight between Haney and Lomachenko, but it remains to be seen if Devin and his father Bill will agree to that.
You can’t blame Haney if he chooses to avoid the Lomachenko fight because it’s a stylistic mismatch for him because Loma has a much better skill set, and has more experience as a professional and especially as a fan.
Haney can always blame the loss to Lomachenko on weight, and many boxing fans will buy into that. Undoubtedly, the couple will not know the excuse of Haney’s weight and will see it as a situation where Lomachenko is the better fighter.
“I think he is young, active. He’s undefeated, and he’s got good technique and other things in boxing,” Lomachenko told Yahoo Sports when asked about Jamaine Ortiz.

“Ortiz is a professional. It’s fast. He likes to go for different combinations, and he moves well in the ring. I think this fight will remind you of the struggle of a good lover.
“I didn’t have many options, so I was given two possible candidates, and I chose Ortiz because he was undefeated. This fight against the young fighter will show whether it is the case,” said Lomachenko about whether he is close to being the same fighter he once was.
“The number one opponent for me is Devin Haney because he has four belts now. And in terms of boxing style, that would be Gervonta Davis.
