By Robert Segal: Bob Arum is giving his former fighter Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez a “good shot” at defeating Dmitry Bivol on November 5th. Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) defended his WBA light heavyweight title against Ramirez on DAZN at the Etihad Arena, Abu Dhabi, in the UAE.
Ramirez (44-0, 30 KOs) is no longer with Arum’s Top Rank promotional company and has signed with Golden Boy Promotions, who are trying to help capture his first world title at 175 against WBA heavyweight champion Bivol (20-0, 11). KOs).
Despite the potential early on, the 13-year-old Ramirez has failed to become a superstar, and it’s unclear if he ever will. Although Ramirez has a lot of free kicks, he is not a great scorer.
Most of the shots he had to make were off his swing, and he didn’t face the big opposition needed to become a star. Ramirez held the WBO middleweight title from 2016 to 2018, but was unbeaten during that time.
Ramirez wanted to fight Canelo and Gennadiy Golovkin, but neither showed interest.
In moving up to 175, Ramirez gained a lot of weight and became slower with his punches. This lack of speed could hurt his chances of winning against Bivol because he is very quick, and unlike Ramirez, he throws combinations instead of taking single shots.
“You’re discounting Zurdo Ramirez. Ramirez is in a good shot against Bivol,” Bob Arum told Fighthype. “I gave it a shot. We’ve spent many years with Ramirez, and I’ve always felt that he’s a very brave, hard worker, and myself, I think he’s a scary young man.
“I give it a shot with the Bivol, a very good shot. This does not mean that Bivol is not a very good fighter, as he proved in the ring. It takes a really good fighter to beat Canelo Alvarez, and he’s got a very good broadside against Canelo.
“I consider myself a friend of Canelo. I hang out with him. He’s a very nice guy, but I don’t talk to him. So I honestly don’t know what he’s thinking about where he’s going after his next fight. But Canelo Alvarez is one of the best fighters of our time, and he and Eddy Reynoso will recognize that.
“Whoever wins this war and if [Artur] Beterbiev won, I talked to Artur, and he wants to do this fight if he wins against Yarde.
“Beterbiev was born in Chechnya, which is Russia, but he lived and worked out of Canada for over a decade, so he’s about as Canadian as you can be.
“He’ll fight anyone, and I’m very proud of him for always being ready to step up to the table and face the toughest opponent,” Arum said.
