By Allan Fox: Manny Pacquiao, the former eight-division world champion, says he is ready to take on the winner of the fight between Errol Spence Jr and Terence Crawford. Pacquiao will need to come out of retirement to fight the winner this time.
If Pacquiao is serious about wanting to fight the winner, he needs to get back in the ring and fight under his belt against a top opponent. The boxing public will be more interested in seeing Pacquiao fight the Spence-Crawford winner if he shows that he still has the skills by defeating a top 20 fighter first.
The 43-year-old Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs) was asked on Thursday if he wanted to face the still-unsigned Spence-Crawford winner, and he asked in the rough.
Despite his age, Pacquiao looked good last year in a loss against Yordenis Ugas in August 2021. If Pacquiao hadn’t suffered a strain in his calves from all the running he did in training camp, he could have beaten Ugaas. The scores were 115-113, 116-112, and 116-112.
“Why? If that is possible. We will start to see the results. I’ll watch,” Manny Pacquiao told reporters when asked if he would be interested in a fight between Errol Spence Jr and the winner of Terence Crawford.
At the same time that talks are going on for Spence-Crawford, Pacquiao may be in his seventies when the fight takes place. Spence & Crawford may need to move on because they’ve dedicated a good portion of 2022 trying to fight together, and they have nothing to show for it.
With the amount of time Spence and Crawford put in to make the mega-fat fight, they could fight twice this year and earn the same amount of money to fight each other.
Pacquiao has an exhibition match coming up in December against an unknown man, which allows him to remove some of the web from his game. Pacquiao needs to get back in the ring with a real boxer from the top 20, like Blair Cobbs, Abel Ramos, or rematch with Yordenis Ugaas.
It’s important that Pacquiao fights better opposition if he has his sights set on infighting Spence or Crawford. These two wouldn’t want to fight Pacquiao if they believed he was shot.
