Eddie Hearn, the promoter of former two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, says Dillian Whyte is now the frontrunner to face the British star in early 2023.

Joshua previously knocked out Whyte in seven fights back in December 2015.

Joshua is looking to bounce back after losing to current WBO, IBF, IBO world champion Oleksandr Usyk.

Initially, he wanted to return before the end of the year, but his return is now posted for the first quarter of 2023.

Earlier this year, Whyte was knocked out in six rounds when he challenged WBC world champion Tyson Fury.

Whyte will return on November 26 against Jermaine Franklin.

If he beats Frankin, injury free, Whyte will be at the top of Joshua’s list.

“About the names, talk to [Joshua] The other day, he wants to fight Dilian Whyte, really. Dillian Whyte fights on November 26 [Jermaine] Franklin, who’s talking amazing, and we’ll see how that goes,” Hearn told The DAZN Boxing Show.

“I think Dillian Whyte is the best [for Joshua] when he comes through. Otto Wallin is a man who has reached many times. Fighting is also good for him. And then there is [Deontay] Wilder situation. I’m not saying it’s going to be a January or February fight, but it’s definitely a fight he’s looking at.

“Jin AJ is the value – and by the way, none of them are easy to say – tune-up sometimes they are as dangerous as each other. I don’t think he wants to start out of the top 15 and top 10 of the government agencies and just looking for relief . I think he likes real fights, and these are all fights you can see.”

Hearn tried to rematch Joshua-Whyte in 2019. In several interviews, the big promoter stated that Whyte had overpriced himself – which ultimately led to Hearn booking the first in Joshua’s America. Things did not go as planned, as Joshua suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Andy Ruiz at Madison Square Garden. Joshua would get revenge by winning their second match six months later.
