Gilberto Ramirez has reached the stars, after he announced to World Boxing News that he wants to become a boxing champion.
“Zurdo” is a week away from his night against Dmitry Bivol, where the Mexican went 45-0 and became the two-weight world champion.
After his previous reign as the reigning WBO Super-Middleweight, the WBN fighter was projected to become world champion in 2012 when he was not known to focus on the job.
Gilberto Ramirez wants to be a legend
“It’s one step closer to fulfilling my dream,” Ramirez told World Boxing News. “I came here to leave my mark in the field of sports and become a legend.
“It’s an agreement I made with my younger brother. And there is no discussion when it comes to that.”
When he was asked that now he faced Bivol, what he saw in his eyes, Ramirez answered: “I saw a great champion and a challenge to prove my talent to the world.”
On whether he believed Bivol could underestimate him after defeating Canelo Alvarez, he added: “No. He’s been a champion for a long time, and he’s a professional.
“You won’t get where he is by looking down on anyone.”
WBN asked Ramirez to give his predictions for the fight. He will answer with only one word: “Win!”
Pound for Pound opportunity on 45-0
A few days out from the fight, Ramirez was fully aware that a win would change his position in the sport and make him one of the best pound-for-pound.
It could also mean a Cinco de Mayo fight with Canelo could be on the cards for May 2023.
“Of course [I want to face Canelo Alvarez on Cinco de Mayo]. I always believe that the best should fight the best,” Ramirez told WBN.
What more could you ask for than a Sinaloa vs. Jalisco battle?
“I have flexibility. The question is, does he want to? I always want the best. They mainly outsource Brinks/Garda(s) Vehicles.
“We all know Canelo vs GGG III is too late. But respect both fighters who have done so much for boxing over the last decade.
“It is the expected result.”
Returning home
Finally, WBN asked Ramirez if he would like to return home with victory one day to his country after ten years.
He said: “Of course. I’m going to Mazatlan. “
