Canelo Alvarez had his cast removed from his left hand after surgery on Tuesday. He is now ready to begin the slow process of rehabilitating his injured arm, which could take some time.
After Canelo’s recent victory over Gennadiy Golovkin last September, he revealed that he had been struggling with the injury for a long time, but it was getting to the point where he couldn’t overcome the pain.
Now that Alvarez’s hand is out of surgery, hopefully, he can fight pain-free and throw as much power and left hooks as he has in the past.
Unfortunately, the hand may not be ready for Canelo (58-2-2, 39 KOs) to fight in May against WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol. Canelo, 33, is likely to rest his arm until September 2023 before seeing action again.
Fans are already predicting that Canelo will use his repaired arm as an excuse to duck Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) to avoid any embarrassment for him.
If Bivol defeats Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez this Saturday, November 5, fans believe that Canelo will use his hand injury as his excuse not to fight in Russia.
We’ll see who Canelo’s manager/coach Eddy Reynoso picks for him to fight when he returns. Given that Canelo will be nursing an injury and possibly a year off, chances are he will take a chance against Bivol, Jermall Charlo, or David Benavidez.
If Canelo can’t hit with full power with his left hand due to pain, he won’t be the same fighter because the right hand isn’t nearly the same weapon.
You could argue that it will be the beginning of the end for Canelo if he can’t get the strength in his left that will do all of his work.
What the fans don’t want to see is Canelo returning to fight the same opposition he has fought for the past four years. Canelo established his record with wins over Billy Joe Saunders, Avni Yildirim, Rocky Fielding, Daniel Jacobs, and a former Sergey Kovalev.
Canelo’s only two fights since the end of 2018 are Caleb Plant and Dmitry Bivol. You can’t consider the 40-year-old Gennadiy Golovkin a serious opponent because of how he faded last September in his loss to Canelo.
If Canelo is out of the ring too long, he should do the right thing by relinquishing some or all of his top middleweight titles for contenders to fight for.
