By Dan Ambrose: Canelo Alvarez showed off his operated left arm today on social media after removing the cast. The Mexican star has been struggling with the injury for a long time, and he finally decided to fix the problem after his victory over Gennadiy Golovkin last September.
With the injury affecting Canelo’s left arm, it leaves open many questions of whether he will ever regain the power he once had. His left hand is where he produces his punching power.
If Canelo can’t hit with the same power as he once did with his left, he’ll be an easy pick for the 168-pounders and, of course, fodder for the heavyweights.
Canelo’s promoter Eddie Hearn hopes he can return to the ring by next May for a fight against WBA lightweight champion Dmitry Bivol.
Unfortunately, there is a possibility that Canelo will choose to slowly rehabilitate his left hand and return in September 2023. If so, it is doubtful that he will choose to face Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) because he will not go. they want to take such an important fight like this after 12 months.
If Canelo fights in September against the likes of John Ryder or Zach Parker, his rematch with Bivol could be pushed to 2024. At that point, it would be pointless for Canelo to face Bivol again because of the boxing public. they forgot about it. the war will not be interested.
Canelo will need to take it easy in training after this injury because the last thing he needs is to get injured again and need another surgery.
Some fighters who suffer arm injuries are forced to throw with less power than before to avoid re-injury. With that said, it will be difficult for Canelo to transition from a puncher to a boxer at this stage of his career.
There are a lot of great fighters who can’t wait to share the ring with Canelo to beat him, and he will need to be 100% to have a chance to win. David Benavidez and Jermall Charlo are just two of the many fighters who can’t wait to add Canelo’s scalp to their career.
