TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – A Tyler native won big at this year’s Josie Awards in Nashville.

It was a night to remember for two East Texas musicians Sunday at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville.

They share the experience of winning the Josie Award on the infamous Opry stage.

“I am so honored and blessed to be able to stand on the same stage as so many other huge, huge legends,” said Tyler-native and Josey Award-winning artist, Heather Nicole Harper.

The 8th Annual Josie Music Awards took place Sunday night at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee. The Josie Music Awards is the world’s largest independent music awards show.

Harper was shocked to hear her name called for artist of the year. “For me to have that honor to accept Artist of the Year…I’m a small town girl in East Texas…I really have no words, it’s just surreal, I’m like walking on air today,” Harper said.

He says the journey has been challenging and he could not have done it without the support of his family. Harper says, “I’m so blessed that my family has been so supportive because there have been endless nights of coming home late. “Having like eight shows a week, and working really hard writing and recording my own music. There have been times where I’ve lost my voice because I love going out there and performing for people.”

Also in attendance from Carthage were Sheila and the Caddo Cats, who previously won two Josie Awards for Entertainer of the Year. On Sunday they won Album of the Year for their latest album ‘Country Soul Living in the City’.

“We looked at each other and I was like…[eyes wide open and mouth gaping]”says Sheila Fox. “We looked at each other and said, ‘Did we hear that right?'” says guitarist Alan Fox.

They looked out at the thousands of people in the audience, overwhelmed by the thought of all the great performers standing on that stage. The surreal moment left them both speechless, but Alan Fox found the words to give. “A shout out to our bass player who wasn’t there, thank you Jesus, without him we wouldn’t be where we are without our God given talent, and all our family and friends and fans who support us. We would be nowhere without our fans.”

Sheila Fox says this year has been particularly special for her and a dream come true “It was amazing to be in that place,” Sheila said. “It was a childhood dream to get on this stage. Being at the Grand Ole Opry was amazing.”

Harper is nominated for a Josie Award for Songwriting Achievement for her song ‘Home Sweet Texas’ and we’ll know the results soon.
