LIMPOPO – It was time again last Saturday for Mungana Lonene FM’s 17th Jitsonga Music Awards, which celebrates artists, producers, songwriters and cultural dancers who create music and art in Jitsonga.

The big winner of the night was Themba Nathi, who won the most popular song category with his famous song A Kuna Talhari. It was all thanks to the votes from the audience, which allowed him to walk away with R30 000.

The song’s producer, Stanley Chillon, also won the best producer award.

Voting for the best candidates for each award was open to the public for several weeks before the ceremony took place last Saturday.

Themba Nyathi Jitsonga won the Most Popular Song award.

Fans voted for their favorite artists and songs, and lucky winners walked away with statues and prize money ranging from R12 000-R30 000 per prize.

The awards kicked off with a gala dinner last Friday, where the station honored five Jitsonga music legends. Patrick Nkuna and Peter Hlungwani were honored posthumously for Vuelua, while Dr Joe Shirimane was recognized as a living legend and Jeff Malule was honored with a lifetime achievement award.

After the award ceremony, a music festival was organized with artistes like Musa Kiss, Joe Shirimani, Mr Bo, Dr Malinga and Mr Post who performed till Sunday morning.

New kid on the block, Dr Sophie, won two awards at the 17th Zitsonga Music Awards.

Munghana Lonene FM program manager Tebogo Magubene Jitsonga urged artists and creators to rally behind the initiative, saying it should be seen as a lasting legacy that should be preserved for future generations.

“The purpose of this award is to promote culture, tradition, language and social cohesion through music and dance. We are delighted with the awards and positive that they will indeed act as a game changer by encouraging more artistes to create music in Jitsonga and honor those who work tirelessly to promote their music,” said Magubane.

He congratulated all the winners and all the participants, as well as the Munghana Lonen FM listeners who voted till the last minute.
