MTV’s annual celebration of its roots, the Video Music Awards, is almost upon us. Those nostalgic for when the channel was originally about music and videos can enjoy a night of fun from a generation of artists who mostly do. no I remember that golden age.
Here’s one, at least, for the OGs: With Madame X (Nominated for Best Longform Video), madonna Became the only person to be nominated every decade since the VMAs began. This is his 69th nomination (most in event history) with a historic 20 wins under his belt. That’s a lot of moon men!
But times have really changed since Madonna first started making her name in the ’80s, and now an artist is called “the best Metaverse Performance,” which is a lot like a music video, in its own way. Ariana Grande, BTS, and Charli XCX are recognized for their shows on Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox, respectively.
Kendrick Lamar, Jack Harlow and Lil Nas X lead the list of nominees with seven nods each—the latter two mostly for their collaborations with “Industry Baby.” With six nominations each are Harry Styles (“As It Was”) and Doja Cat (“Woman,” “Get Into It (Yuh)”). Also on the leaderboard is Billie Eilish, Drake, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, The Weeknd and Taylor Swift (who returned to the VMAs with a new version of an old track, “Everything is good.”)
The VMAs will take place on Sunday, August 28th at 8PM ET/PT and can be seen on The CW, BET, BET Her, CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Pop, TVLand as well as MTV. and VH1. See the full list of nominees below.
