An anonymous reader quoted a report from the Wall Street Journal: Starting next year, executive MBA students at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania can earn a $223,500 degree from their living room. After years of resistance, some of the country’s leading business schools are starting virtual MBA programs that require only a few days of hands-on teaching. Wharton and Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business said they will include the option for executive and part-time MBA students to take most coursework online by 2023. This fall, part-time MBA students at the Stern School of Business and the University of California New University York, Haas Berkeley School of Business is given online options for most of their classes. All programs will charge online students the same tuition fees as those who attend in person, and those online students will earn the same degrees and credentials as their on-campus counterparts.
The move to give students flexible location options comes as demand for the traditional two-year, full-time MBA program has declined amid a competitive job market and growing concerns about tuition fees. Between 2009 and 2020 the number of online MBAs at accredited business schools in the US more than doubled, and schools added more online MBA degrees over the past two years during the pandemic, according to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The latest announcement by Wharton and others marks a turning point for degree adoption even at highly ranked campuses, school leaders said. For decades, part of the allure of the MBA has been face-to-face networking. But over the past two years, fully online MBA programs in the US enrolled more students than face-to-face programs, according to the association’s survey of more than 150 business schools. A McDonough official said part-time MBA students tend to be less interested in the network aspect of the school.
