Academic advice: UG, PG degree via online/remote mode to be equivalent to regular courses

Degree through distance learning

Due to some reasons beyond my control, I had to pursue my BCom and MCom from the Open University. I am now eager to pursue my MBA from an elite B school like IIMS. However, I have heard that degrees earned through distance learning are not recognized or accepted on a par with regular courses. Is this true? Will that get in the way of my choice?

In what may be a relief to lakhs of students like you, UGC recently reaffirmed that UG and PG degrees earned via online/remote mode from UGC recognized institutions will be treated on a par with those earned through conventional modes. In a public circular of 2 September 2022, UGC further added that even such PG Diplomas will be treated the same as those offered through conventional modes. However, your acceptance to the IIMS will depend on several other criteria including CAT scores, work experience, overall academic performance and how you performed in GD and Personal Interviews. If you fill all these slots, you have nothing to worry about. Good luck.

Important private university

When looking at colleges and courses to pursue at the undergraduate level, we’ve come across some interesting options at private universities. But people seem to look down on private universities. As a result, we were very confused.

Private universities are India’s fastest growing segment of higher education. The number of private universities has increased to a whopping 403 (out of a total of 1026 overall) according to the UGC consolidated list. These private universities, which include public private universities and private universities are considered to outnumber the central universities/institutions and accept a much larger number of students. In addition, some of the better private universities have brought much-needed innovation and diversity to our country’s higher education world. Many of them have ties to foreign universities and enjoy the freedom to update their curriculum according to industry norms and requirements. Moreover, all these private universities are under the purview of UGC. They cannot operate without being recognized by the UGC. Whether it’s privately run or government run, look at the ranking, tenure, and overall track record of the university concerned. In short, please do your own due diligence and move on. No effort no result.
