Good news for professionals looking to apply for an MBA faster—more and more top MBA programs are relaxing their testing requirements.

Professionals who consider their experience to speak to their management competence and wish to skip the test altogether and applicants who think they will perform better on the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) than the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) may be pleased to hear that most of the top MBA programs do not. again have GMAT-specific test score requirements.

In fact, some programs do not require test scores to be submitted at all. Top 10 schools in PropertyThe top MBA program rankings have a “flexible” GMAT requirement—meaning they accept GMAT or GRE test scores.

While it is more common that online, part-time, and executive MBA programs do not require applicants to submit GMAT scores, a large number of full-time programs have also waived this requirement.

The top-ranked schools are indicative of a broader trend in MBA admissions policy, a trend that began before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic but accelerated in the past two years, according to Esther Magna, principal MBA admissions consultant at Stacy Blackman, an MBA admissions consulting firm.

Top schools want to ensure diversity in their entry cohort—a diversity of personal and professional backgrounds—and maintaining the GMAT requirements somewhat limits the types of students who apply, Magna adds. But most MBA programs, especially the top-ranked ones, require students to be analytical and data-driven, he adds.

“These programs are looking to attract people who can handle the quantitative gymnastics inherent in an MBA program,” says Magna. “So through the admissions process, it is very important that applicants demonstrate that they can handle quantitative courses.”

Depending on what school they are applying to, some students may choose to submit GRE scores or take an Executive Assessment to prove quantitative aptitude. Meanwhile, other applicants may present their work experience as proof of their abilities.
