NMHU News:

The Department of Business Administration at the University of Highlands announced three new degree programs: the Master of Business Administration with a concentration in health administration, the Bachelor of Applied Science in General Business, and the Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership in Public Security.

All three degrees are offered in online and asynchronous modalities over eight weeks to meet the growing need for professionals looking to upgrade skills or grow into leadership roles in the workplace.

It Master in Business Administration (MBA) degree with a concentration in health administration launched during the spring semester of 2022. According to Dr. D. Veena Parboteeah, Dean of the School of Business, Media & Technology, offering this degree is one way NMHU can help meet the demand for healthcare professionals across New Mexico.

Students will take courses from NMHU’s general MBA catalog in addition to three specialized courses in health care that will give them the knowledge they need in health care administration. Potential also exists for a focus on health administration in rural areas. This program is designed for anyone who is interested, including those who are already in the industry and are looking for a promotion or transition to administration.

It Bachelor of Applied Science in General Business (BAS) launched at NMHU in the fall of this year, and students on this degree track can tailor their coursework to the type of profession they wish to pursue. The Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership in Public Security (BA) will officially launch in the spring of 2023, but there are already students enrolled in the program this fall.

Both programs are designed for students who have an associate degree or previous training or certification relevant to their field of study, and both work well for transfer students from community colleges who are accustomed to fast-track learning. Additionally, distance students who prefer to interact with instructors can do so at the campus center.

It Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership in Public Security (BA) is specifically designed for public safety areas such as police and firefighters, and any previous training and certifications they have from their job can count towards their minor degree. And as with the BAS, students who complete the BA will have a wide choice of top-division courses, including leadership, public safety, and criminology classes.

“We were approached by people in the public safety field, and they specifically asked for this title, so we got a lot of feedback from the industry to get this title started,” Parboteeah said. “The BA is a collaboration between the Department of Business Administration, the Department of History and Political Science, and the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice.”

A BA degree will help graduates progress to leadership roles or within their organizations and also prepare them for entering postgraduate programs such as the new Highlands University university. Master of Arts in Criminology or MBA program.
