Governor RN Ravi on Sunday urged young lawyers to think of ways to operationalize the eleven Basic Duties as enshrined in the Constitution.
Speaking to law students at the Madras Bar Association (MBA) National Moot Court Competition valedictorian, he said Basic Duty tells us all that is needed for the growth of society and the country. The task has very noble ideals, he added.
Talking about the need for the legal profession to be able to adapt to the changes brought about by technology, he said young people can be the drivers of this change. He talks about the way countries are developing with startups and the role technology plays in medicine. “We know that machines cannot replace humans. But they can help. Likewise, in the legal profession there can also be innovations and new applications in the legal system so as to ensure access to justice and its fast delivery,” he said.
Acting Chief Justice Madras T. Raja said population growth, economic recession and lack of resources are creating more litigation in the country. “The more litigation, we need more lawyers,” he added.
The team from Sastra Law School consisting of final year students G. Shivashankar, KR Sarva Easwaran and Meenakshi Raman, won the competition. The contentious issues relate to a variety of subjects, including press freedom under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the scope of what constitutes a legitimate expression of dissent (criminal law), and the rights or privacy of journalists (constitutional law). ).
MBA VR President Kamalanathan said 14 law schools and many other law schools participated in the competition. He said the MBA had planned to hold a two-day seminar on the art of advocacy. MBA Secretary D. Sreenivasan spoke.
