Touhou Danmaku Kagura is dead, live Touhou Danmaku Kagura. The mobile rhythm game based on the popular Project Touhou franchise officially closed as promised. However, developer UnknownX has announced that it plans to salvage as much of the now-dead game as possible to rebirth it as a new title. Its name will be Touhou Danmaku Kagura: Phantasia Lostand it is targeted for release on Steam in 2023. It will be released worldwide. [Thanks, Dengeki!]

Key to the movement is a crowdfunding campaign hosted on the Japanese crowdfunding website Campfire. The campaign will start on November 4, 2022 and has a goal of 15 million yen (about $102 thousand USD). Watch a trailer for the campaign below:

UnknownX stated that although it was “blessed with the opportunity” to revamp the game in this way, it and its financial partners alone cannot carry all the development, which is why it is resorting to crowdfunding. The game will be a standalone title, and will be operable offline, with the interface and rhythm mechanics redesigned for controller-based operation. It will have a new story mode, set up by the premise of reviving Gensokyo after a disaster left it in ruins. The Mitama Cards and their art will be incorporated into the story mode as a way to unlock the memories of Gensokyo. There will also be a free play mode allowing players to enjoy the rhythm game “to their heart’s content”. Additional content such as Mitama Cards and songs will be added through updates and eventually, paid DLC packs. The game will support Japanese, Chinese and English options.

Touhou Danmaku Kagura: Phantasia Lost is in development. Its crowdfunding campaign will begin on November 4, 2022.
