Netflix has released the official trailer for The Witcher: Blood Origin (opens in a new tab)the four-part prequel mini-series that will debut on December 25th.
Some of the bits in this teaser we’ve seen before, and the new stuff unfortunately doesn’t reveal too much about what to expect from the show. There is Michelle Yeoh with a sword, there is a green sight and a sad elf, there is a burning city, there is a meaningful look, there is Michelle Yeoh talking about a prophecy, there is an elf opening a portal, violenceand there is another vast prospect.
All pretty nice, but also very generic. If it hadn’t specified “The Witcher” in the video (and the YouTube listing) I’d have no idea what it was: It might as well be another Game of Thrones thing, or maybe a Wheel of Time spinoff. (Yes, those are HBO and Amazon, I know.)
Blood Origin is set 1,200 years before Geralt’s time, and promises to tell the story of the creation of the first Wizard and the events that led to the Conjunction of the Realms, when the worlds of the multiverse collided and brought monsters, magic, and other such headaches together in this sphere. That magical disaster eventually led to the creation of Witchers: Magical warriors who could protect humanity against this new plague of invaders.
The timeline seems a little off. The Witcher novels say that the Conjunction of the Realms happened 1,500 years earlier, three centuries before the Blood Origin timeline – quite a difference, even allowing for the vagaries of historical revision. Wizards were also only a human creation, while the series seems to have focused mainly on the elves. It sure could be both in the series, but it’s hard to overlook the fact that so far, this Witcher show seems to be woefully short on wizards.
It’s entirely possible that Netflix is holding back that aspect of the show for a surprise reveal, like the Darth Vader reveal at the end of Revenge of the Sith (but hopefully without the unintentional comedy). But even if that’s the case, it leaves Blood Origin feeling empty-handed to me: I’ve seen absolutely nothing so far—no cool monster hunter, no band of fun friends, no gross, weird monsters—that feels like it. like a Witch thing.
Maybe it doesn’t matter: The Witcher has done very well for itself as a standalone new series (I pretty strongly suspect that most of the Netflix audience weren’t big fans of Polish fantasy) and Michelle Yeoh is a big draw on her own. , so it’s possible the tenuous connection between the shows won’t matter—especially if Blood Origin is any good, which I certainly hope is the case. We’ll find out at Christmas.
