With each passing year, it seems as though the PC gaming market continues to see a fairly significant amount of growth. This is no more true than in the case of Japan, where the computer game market has reportedly doubled in just the last three years.
According to a Japanese think tank KADOKAWA ASCII Research Laboratories and as reported by Kantan Games’ Dr. Sekan Totothe PC gaming market – long considered a niche in Japan compared to mobile and console gaming – has seen quite significant growth in the past three years, with its total value landing at 131.3 billion yen (US$896 million) in 2021. As mentioned. , this represents twice the value of the computer market in Japan compared to 2018.
Not only has the value increased, but so has the physical number of PC gamers, increasing from 11 million in 2015 to 16 million in 2021 (45% increase in gamers – although actual growth in actuality is closer to 22% due to the population growth of video game players in the country during the same period.)
The final notable figures released revealed the fact that 4.5 million of the 16 million total PC gamers actually play exclusively on the platform (with the other 11.5 million also playing mobile/console).
The Japanese market has long focused on mobile gaming and then console gaming, with PCs bringing up the rear. While the majority of gamers remain mobile and console loyalists, it’s interesting to see how quickly the PC market is catching up.
