Diwali holiday in New York

New York, October 24: Priyanka Chopra welcomed Diwali with a shout out to Jennifer Rajkumar, the first Indian-American woman to be elected Member of the New York State Assembly, who lobbied for Diwali to be declared a public school holiday in New York starting in 2023.

Rajkumar, whose 2020 assembly race has been endorsed by California Congressman Ro Khanna, represents some neighborhoods in Queens and also chairs the subcommittee on diversity in law. New York, moreover, is home to more than 2,00,000 people of Indian origin.

Chopra, who is best known in the US for his performance in the FBI drama series ‘Quantico’, reposted a video to his Instagram Story where Rajkumar broke the news. Along with the video, Chopra wrote: “After all these years! My teenage self living in Queens is crying tears of joy. #representation matters.”

Last Diwali, Chopra, who will soon be seen with Richard Madden in the sci-fi TV series “The Citadel”, posted pictures of the festivities at her home, with her husband, Nick Jonas, dressed in Indian clothes.
