CLINTON, SC – A quintet of Presbyterian College women’s soccer players were selected from among an elite list of NCAA Division I student-athletes on Tuesday afternoon, making the cut for inclusion on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team. Recognizing the nation’s top performers for their abilities both on the field and in the classroom, the CSC Academic All-District group features Blue Hose regulars. Reyna Coston, Kelly Hall, Gwen Keizer, Caitlin Murphyand Megan Wilson.
All players who meet the varied criteria to make the CSC Academic All-District squad automatically advance to the All-America ballot to be announced in early December, divided into three different groups. After collecting back-to-back Big South wins to close out the 2022 table, a slew of PC performers were rewarded for their stellar efforts in academia by claiming the All-District honor.
A junior from Maryville, Tennessee, Coston is grabbing her first major academic accolade as a Blue Hose forward with a 3.74 GPA in a loaded class schedule that entails a business administration major. A standout in both aspects of the student-athlete title, the third-year forward competed in 40 matches throughout her time in Clinton, starting 32 of them. Coston has contributed 10 points to the Presbyterian offense since the COVID-shortened spring ’21 campaign, turning in one goal (in a 2-1 comeback W at High Point) and one assist (on the road against Longwood) this past season. The junior racked up more than 1,100 minutes to lead all PC players at his position in ’22, racking up 41 career shots behind a career-high 20 this semester.
One of only 10 individuals to be represented on the Big South All-Academic team, which translated into Tuesday’s CSC All-District nod, Hall’s perfect 4.0 GPA as a sophomore promises an extremely bright future for the sophomore goalkeeper from Suwanee, Georgia . A member of the league’s Presidential Honor Roll during her freshman year with a Business Administration major, Hall swung into the Blue Hose’s starting spot at GK in 2022, tallying 58 saves behind a .734 percentage over 1,100 minutes. Joining the company of Sarah Beth Anderson (2011) and Sydney Fontenot (2014 and 2015) as fellow PC guards to record three shutouts in a single year since the program jumped to the DI level in 2007, Hall held off ETSU, Alabama State, and UNC . Asheville scoreless, also silencing USC Upstate in nearly 75 minutes of work. The sophomore goalie went for five saves or more against six different opponents, stopping a career-high eight attempts against the Spartans, Georgia State, and Mississippi State.
Resembling Coston with a 3.93 grade point average in the daunting double major of economics and business administration, Keizer completed a sophomore stint that saw playing time in all but one of Presbyterian’s 17 games, starting 12 of those games. An in-state product hailing from Charleston, Gwen marks the team’s third Academic All-District recipient to surpass 1,100 minutes last fall, picking up her second career assist in a home meet against Radford on Sept. 24. Anchoring the midfield to the tune of 10 shots on the year, Keizer totaled 107 minutes in PC’s final two wins over High Point and UNC Asheville within a four-day span.
The final two recipients of the CSC All-District Academic team were also named among the Big South President’s Honor Roll for the 2021-22 school year, the first of which in alphabetical order goes to Murphy. Another Palmetto State native, claiming Blythewood as her hometown, Caitlin soared to a 3.93 GPA this fall while regularly seeing head coaching time. Brian Purcell‘s unit, featured in the starting XI over 14 matchups in 2022. Majoring in the field of economics and business administration, the junior MF dished out an assist in PC’s home contest against Kennesaw State while producing eight shots on goal (12 total ). ). Recording one helper in all three of her seasons with the blue and white, Murphy has accumulated well over 2,000 minutes since the Spring ’21 slate, racking up 30 total shots.
Last but certainly not least on the Blue Hose’s impressive resume of Academic All-District highlights, Wilson caps off an extraordinary defensive career with Presbyterian by posting yet another award for her classroom efforts. A Big South President’s Honor Roll member during her junior season with a chance to repeat, the senior has tallied nearly 4,000 minutes as a ball stopper over four full seasons, starting 45 contests since 2019. Appearing in all but one game this year as one of the most reliable players at her position to come out of the program, Wilson is finishing her final undergraduate year with a current GPA of 3.92 alongside a biochemistry major.
