Buying a pre-built computer used to be something to make fun of. Things have changed, however, as the battle for the top spot is an ongoing war for customer satisfaction.
Getting a new computer but don’t have the resources to build it yourself? As PC gaming expands, so does the quality of pre-built machines. These used to be a gamble of overpriced, underspecified and poorly built machines. Since the need for high-quality machines is needed at all levels of gaming, it’s fortunate that these companies have upped their game since the wild years.
So, which is best? Who will build you a a good pre-built computer without any complications, outside of the time it takes to build it?
As we head into Black Friday and the holidays, be aware that most PC builders will have long lead times. Consider that when ordering.
What is the best pre-built computer?
We can decide based on the specs on offer, with the cost to you, which is the best pre-built gaming PC. Also, no, we haven’t watched every warehouse where these computers are built – as much as we’d love to. We work out how much this would cost you, versus the price of a computer if you built it yourself.
As with the original Starforge lineup, if the price doesn’t match the specs, we’ll be sure to highlight it here. It may be cheaper to get help building it yourself.
However in our own experiences, most pre-built PC vendors have the right staff on board, those who either care deeply about the tech industry or customer service. You don’t have to worry too much about where you get it from, because almost every major player in the game will build, package and ship your PC properly. Hopefully.
Best budget pre-built gaming PC under $1000:
Unfortunately, when it comes to pre-built computers, the budget ends up under $1000. Computers are expensive, mostly due to the ongoing problems with electronics shortages around the world. However, with Black Friday approaching, it looks like Best Buy has some great budget-level, easy-to-upgrade machines on the way at the moment.
Although they will not be created in a custom workshop, with wooden desks and various streamers above them, if you want something relatively cheap and easy, it might be your best choice.
Of course, not all computers are created equal and things like iBuyPower’s i3-12100F for a whopping $730 are an absolute rip off. The i3 won’t get you anywhere outside of some really low-end gaming, and the GTX 1650 is slowly being phased out.
There are also many models with 8GB of RAM. You want something that will have at least 16GB. If you have the heart for it, you could always add your own, as your first step in upgrading your system.
However, now CyberPowerPC with RX6700 XT and Ryzen 7 5700 might not sound spectacular on paper compared to modern systems. It is, however, a perfectly capable machine for those into MMOs, sports or any decent 1080p gaming. It currently retails at $999.99, with a $400 discount.
Elsewhere, we’d also recommend B&H’s iBUYPOWER SlateMR, which has an RTX 3060, and a Ryzen 5 5600. This is similarly specced to the one previously mentioned, but with DLSS on board, you’ll be able to push it further. than it might normally go.
Best mid-range pre-built gaming PC under $2000
Mid-range systems are where you can finally stretch your legs and find something without many caveats. Depending on where you look, you might find yourself better than the budget PCs.
These systems often top out with a 3070 Ti, or similar, but could end up featuring DDR5 RAM. We’re moving up another level here, so expect to see over $1000, up to $2000.
If you want a solid 1440p experience, maybe even 4K, and accessibility without having to worry about the internals of your PC, this is the way forward.
Best pre-built gaming PC over $2000
If you’re afraid of big numbers, look away now. These computers are powerful, packed with the latest and greatest from the world of technology. The worst part is? Not many of us will get one. It’s nice to look at, though.
These are now likely to top out at 4090. Yes, the $1500 wonder of the world will absolutely be the best purchase you make – if you can afford the outrageous prices.
Here, we recommend going for anything over an i7, or Ryzen 7. If you’ve got the cash, you might as well go all in. DDR5 as well, you don’t want to limit your computer if you ever plan to upgrade. . Here, you’ll find things like Alienware, or even Starforge’s own systems.
These are the pinnacle of pre-built computers and they will last you quite a while.
Is Alienware the best and worth it?
Depending on what you want out of your system, Alienware could be your golden goose. However, the thing with Alienware is that they are massively overpriced for what you get. Things have come down considerably over the years, but the fact remains that their pre-built computers are expensive.
This is mostly due to the custom cases they use and also being part of Dell. While their laptop division seems to have had the prices wrangled over the last couple of years, their desktop section is another story.
You’ll get great customer service, but unless you want to go all in on the flashy exterior, we can probably do better elsewhere.
What specs are good for a pre-built computer?
Depending on whether you’re going for a pre-built PC to have an easy base to upgrade, or just want an easy machine ready to go, you’ll still need to take care of the specs.
Right now, if you’re going for AMD or Intel, the motherboard inside will be the thing to watch out for. Intel still supports DDR4 RAM, but since we’re on DDR5 now, older motherboards won’t support the next-generation RAM. While your CPU and GPU will be fine, just keep in mind that upgrading could be a lot more intensive than you anticipated.
You don’t want to be ‘tricked’ either. Not that you won’t get your computer, but in terms of getting an older spec machine. There are some really nasty machines lingering from a few years back that we highly recommend you steer clear of.
