The new generation Ford Ranger pickup has just been presented to the world. This new model is a major redesign of the mid-size pickup, and while it’s not officially a truck coming to Canada, consider it a preview of the Ranger we expect to see here in 2023.
The new chassis adds a hydroformed structure up front to accommodate the new V6 and “helps future-proof the Ranger for other powertrain technologies,” meaning a hybrid or all-electric version could be on the cards. The new chassis has a 50mm longer wheelbase and an equally wider track, while the new nose provides more airflow for better cooling when towing or hauling.
Atop the new frame sits an all-new body that combines the compact Maverick pickup with the styling of the larger Ford F-150. The truck’s chief designer, Max Tran, said that “customers told us the Ranger should look tough and inspire confidence,” and that’s what Ford has done.
Ford advertised a new 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine for global markets. Don’t expect this engine to be available in Canada, but a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder will be offered, likely with the same 270-hp engine. and 310 lb.-ft., the same as the current truck. Expect hybrids and other electrified powertrains, as Ford has made it clear that the frame allows it.
Inside, 10.1- and 12-inch touchscreens are offered with the Ford Sync 4 infotainment system, including voice control connectivity. Driving mode controls have been moved from the dashboard and center console to a new screen. An available 360-degree camera will make parking and driving off-road easier, and Ford will offer exterior zone lighting. It should also be noted that these photos from Australia show the steering wheel on the right side, so don’t expect it to make it here!
Ford says that for more truck comfort, the Ranger will have a molded plastic bed that can handle plywood or full-size pallets, as well as scratch protection. More cargo tie-down points will be offered, as well as a new cargo management system with configurable compartments.
Global production is scheduled to begin next year in Europe and Australia, with other markets (including ours) to be announced at a later date.
