The resurrection of the International Harvester Scout has gained further momentum with the launch of the new Scout Motors website, where the Volkswagen-owned brand has revealed the first batch of new electric SUVs and pickups that officials say will be introduced. on a darkened image.
Scheduled to go on sale to customers in 2026, the initial modern Scout is described on the website as having a “strong stance and upright stance reminiscent of classic Scout models.”
Shown from the front, it rides on large off-road tires and appears to have considerable ground clearance.
A high-slung hood with a distinctive contour, square-shaped exterior mirrors, a vertical glass camera and roof rails – elements that usually distinguished the original Scout model line produced between 1961 and 1980 – are also visible on the new SUV.
Volkswagen’s plans to revive the Scout brand were officially announced in May 2022. The Virginia-based automaker is led by former Volkswagen USA CEO Scott Keough, who says he plans to sell up to 250,000 vehicles annually by the end of the decade.
No details regarding the technical aspects of the new line of Scout models have been announced yet.
In an earlier statement, Volkswagen denied they would be based on the MEB platform used by other Volkswagen Group electric vehicles, including the VW ID 4 and VW ID 5, saying they would get their own dedicated electric vehicle platform.
Rumors linked the Scout with a possible technical connection with Ford. Volkswagen’s commercial vehicle division is already working with the company on the Amarok pickup, which was developed alongside the latest Ford Ranger. However, Volkswagen has so far denied any involvement between Scout and Ford. Along with the new website, Scout has also created a community forum and registry to “chronicle classic Scout vehicles, connect owners and share personal photos and stories.”
