Police say a crash between two trucks in Auburn was caused by the sun’s rays | Biden News

Maine State Police say the crash between a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer was partly caused by the sun’s rays.

I don’t really like driving this time of year, and it’s not the snow that bothers me. The fact is that the sun begins to sit lower in the sky and causes an unpleasant glare at a certain time of the day. That appears to be what caused Monday’s crash, which fortunately did not result in non-life-threatening injuries, according to state police.

Where was the accident?

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says the crash happened around 3:30 Monday afternoon on the southbound exit of I-95 in Auburn. The driver of a gray Ford Ranger pickup truck was traveling southbound when he attempted to swerve. As he pulled into the next lane, his pickup caught the rear corner of the tractor trailer and flipped over.

Has anyone been hurt?

The pickup caught fire, but some resourceful motorists who stopped to see if they could help used the fire extinguishers they had in their cars. They managed to put out the fire before the first rescuers arrived. The driver, Richard Kammel, 70, of Sabattus, had to be extricated from the vehicle. After exiting the pickup, Kammel was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with serious, non-life threatening injuries. The tractor driver was not injured.

What caused the pickup truck to collide with the trailer?

Police say the sun’s glare contributed to the crash, making it difficult for Cammel to see how close he was to the big rig. Traffic was backed up before one lane was reopened to traffic.
