Porsche has finally revealed its 911 off-road sports car, dubbed the Dakar, ahead of its public debut at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Limited to just 2,500 units worldwide, the 911 Dakar was created to “demonstrate the almost limitless possibilities” of Porsche’s iconic and enduring model, as well as a tribute to the brand’s victory in the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally.

To that end, the 911 Dakar will be offered with the Rallye design package to emulate the historic car that marked the birth of the all-wheel drive 911.

The most obvious modification to the 911 Dakar is the increased ground clearance, approximately 50 mm higher than the standard 911 Carrera with sports suspension.

Drivers will also be able to raise the front or rear by 30mm for additional ground clearance.

According to Porsche, “ground clearance and ramp angle rival those of conventional SUVs,” but did not specify which numbers.

For the truly adventurous, Porsche has also fitted all-terrain tires to the Dakar with a massive 9mm deep tread pattern and reinforced sidewalls.

To accommodate the new tires, Porsche had to widen the wheel wells and sills, as well as apply stainless steel protective elements.

Other notable features include red tow eyes on the outside, stainless steel grills over the air intakes to protect against stones and a 12-volt power outlet on the roof.

Inside, Porsche hasn’t skimped on luxury either, with standard front bucket seats (rear seats removed), Race-Tex leatherette trim, and a contrasting shade of blue that Porsche calls Shade Green.

Other standard equipment on the 911 Dakar includes rear-axle steering, anti-roll bar and a drive mode selector that includes Rallye and Off-road settings.

The unique model also features off-road launch control, which is expected to make even a Ford Ranger Raptor driver think twice.

And to enhance the coupĂ©’s practicality, options include a roof basket and roof awning, as well as a carbon-plastic rear spoiler and front luggage compartment.

It’s all powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine that delivers 353kW/570Nm to all four wheels via an eight-speed PDK transmission.

Even off-road, the 911 Dakar still accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds.

The Australian price for the 911 Dakar is $491,400 before on-road costs, with the Rallye design package adding another $54,730 to the price.

This makes it the third most expensive option in the 911 coupe range, behind the Turbo S ($506,200) and the GT3 Auto with Touring package ($500,200).

Porsche expects the first local deliveries of the 911 Dakar to comment from the second half of 2023.
