The Baja 1000 starts in a couple of weeks, along with the new Ford Ranger. Well, guess what? There is a development version that participates in competitions to show off its talents. Ford listed it in the SCORES (Southern California Off Road Enthusiasts, which is the sanctioning body) stock class. This means that the engine, suspension and body must share the same basic design as the road car.
The truck was developed by Ford Performance in conjunction with Australian company Kelly Racing, which was tasked with building it and doing the initial development. Once that was done, it was handed over to Ford’s long-time US off-road partner, Lovell Racing, headed by off-road champion Brad Lovell. He completed the final development work and will lead the race team. The car runs on one-third of Shell’s biofuel blend. It contains a mixture of ethanol and biodiesel, which is obtained from vegetable oils, used cooking oils or other types of organic waste.
Of course, Ford is no stranger to the Baja 1000. It took its first overall win in 1968. Since then, he has won several times with different versions of the F-150 Raptor and Bronco. In 2017, he even entered a production F-150 Raptor that finished on the podium and then drove 400 miles home. Baja became an official event in 1967. This is the final part of a four-round series held from Ensenada in Mexico. It’s either a point-to-point time trial or a loop and is considered one of the toughest off-road challenges.
