  • Police have launched a manhunt following the murder of a judge from the Eastern Cape region.
  • During the shooting, the judge’s husband and 13-year-old son were shot dead.
  • The Acting Police Commissioner of the Eastern Cape region has established a special task force to search for and arrest the killers.

A Mt Ayliffe judge in the Eastern Cape died while driving with her husband and children in Mbizana on Saturday night.

The 38-year-old woman’s husband is recovering in hospital after suffering serious bullet wounds to his upper body, while their 13-year-old son also suffered gunshot wounds.

The couple’s 10-year-old son, who was also in the family car that was sprayed with bullets by the assailants, driving a white Ford Ranger double cab, was not injured.

Police declined to name the judge, saying her family had not yet been notified of the incident.

Acting Commissioner of Police for the Eastern Cape, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, has set up a task force of investigators to track down and hunt down the culprits within 72 hours.

Police Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said preliminary investigations showed the judge was traveling from a local village after dropping her mother off at her home.

“As they were driving towards Nomlak, near the Faith Mission Church, a white Ford Ranger double cab appeared and pretended to overtake their car. Then unknown people fired at the car.”

Kinana said:

As a result of the shooting, the woman, believed to be a Mt Ayliff judge, allegedly died of gunshot wounds to the upper body, while the man suffered serious gunshot wounds to the lower and upper body. A 13-year-old son was also injured. A 10-year-old child survived the incident.

Keenana said the man, who was driving the family car at the time, allegedly did not stop after the shooting and drove to a nearby hospital.
