For some time now, members of the Pearl River County Board of Supervisors have been working to obtain the necessary permits to repair a dam along the Pearl River near Wilson Slough.
Les Dungan of Dungan Engineering said he submitted a nationwide permit request for these repairs to the Corps of Engineers on Oct. 17. With the permit filed, the Corps is currently reviewing it before the county can move on to any other process, including finding a contractor to do the work. Dungan said the permitting isn’t the final step before work begins, but it’s a big step in that direction.
Flow on the east side of the Pearl River has dropped dramatically since the reservoir failure earlier this year. Dungan said that side of the river is getting only a trickle of flow at this point, with most going down the reservoir to Louisiana.
According to previous coverage, plans to repair the reservoir will focus only on returning the spillway to its original state when work was originally completed in the late 1990s to split the flow between Louisiana and Mississippi.
As for other repairs, Dungan said the contractor working on George Ford Street will focus on repairing the worst sections of the road. This means that asphalt works on this road will not cover the entire road.
The panel also discussed the current issue of property maintenance in the district. The property in question is located at 28 Hunter’s Trace, which has been discussed several times by Council over the last couple of months. Previous discussions indicate that the property has piles of various items and vehicles are regularly parked in the driveway during renovations. There is also a sewage leak on the property which affects neighboring properties. District III Supervisor Jason Spence said he walked by the property before the Oct. 19 board meeting and noticed little had been done to address the disorder on the property. Board attorney Joe Montgomery said the sewer issue is the most important and should be addressed first. After discussing the issue, the Board accepted a proposal to review this issue during a meeting scheduled for December 5.
Road Manager Charlie Schilder asked the board approve the purchase of a 2022 Ford Ranger for use during work. He said he plans to use the new, smaller truck and transfer the existing, larger truck to other department employees since no one usually drives with him.
By the way, the county’s recent order for 6 full-size trucks from Dodge has been canceled. As a result, traffic management replaces transmissions and engines to keep the fleet moving.
