A 70-year-old man was seriously injured after his pickup truck apparently hit a tractor trailer, overturned and caught fire on I-95 in Auburn.

Passing motorists stop to help after truck crash on interstate

Police say Richard Kammel, 70, of Sabattus, was southbound in a 2011 Ford Ranger pickup truck when he struck the rear corner of a tractor trailer while trying to change lanes. The pickup truck flipped upside down near a fence and caught fire. The drivers who stopped were able to put out the fire with fire extinguishers they had in their cars, Moss said.

Rescuers had to pull Kammel out of the car. He was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with serious but non-life threatening injuries, Moss said.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured in the collision. Investigators believe that the glare of the sun in the evening caused the accident.

Traffic on the interstate was backed up for about three miles until one lane was reopened around 4:30 p.m.
