World Boxing News explains why Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao did not compete in the European Championship in two weight classes.
When Mayweather finally fought his rival Pacquiao in Las Vegas, the former pound-for-pound number one became the king in both divisions.
So, why didn’t the ‘Money’ man put two title belts on the line against ‘Pacman?’
WBN decided to look into what happened back then. Also, what is the opinion of the relevant authorities?
There’s plenty to sort out in the months leading up to the multi-million dollar Pay-Per-View showdown.
Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao
Mayweather was the WBC/WBA champion after his victory over Canelo Alvarez in 2013.
Adding to that, Floyd was also the reigning WBC and WBA. This trend was thanks to victories over Victor Ortiz and Marcos Maidana.
It represented a conflict for those looking into the most profitable war of all time.
Speaking to the WBA President weeks before the fight, here’s what Gilberto Mendoza had to say.
“The WBA is open to suggestions but has not received any requests from Floyd Mayweather or his team,” he told WBN.
“Mayweather and Pacquiao may be the best fight that has ever happened to (the sport of) boxing.”
WBC and WBO
Obviously, Mendoza did not want to lose and was on the outside looking in, because the WBO and WBC did not approve of such a move.
The WBO standard has boxing superstar Pacquiao. And although the WBA and WBC were both on board with their titles entering both divisions, Paco Valcarcel gave him the thumbs up.
According to the rules of the WBO, no fighter can hold the WBO championship in the same division as a trinket group in one second.
It was then decided that the WBA would place their ‘super’ title in the fight on a lower level so that all three could continue to be together.
Although he owns those two heavyweight belts, Mayweather has been denied putting both on the line.
We all know the result. Mayweather won the canter. He, therefore, became the winner of the double-five crawl in total.

But they didn’t want to pay the WBO because of their decision regarding the first condition, the 43-year-old gave up the belt at the first opportunity.
Still holding the WBC/WBA titles at 147 and 154, it’s up to the two leaders, Mendoza and Mauricio Sulaiman, to decide what happens next.
Mayweather had a strong hold on the game at that time. Being the best around gave him bad control.
When asked by WBN after the fight if any of the remaining positions will be left, Sulaiman said it’s up to Mayweather.
“We don’t have any obligations at heavyweight or super welterweight right now,” Sulaiman told WBN. “We gave every opportunity to Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
“So, at this time, we will discuss Mayweather’s future. We will assess the situation during the WBC China meeting in November.
“It will be decided on both sides to understand what Mayweather will do and what will happen.”
Mayweather’s belt
Facing Andre Berto in the final fight of his Showtime deal, Mayweather refused to give up any position.
Defending the WBC/WBA Welterweight titles, Mayweather has retained his light heavyweight belt as a reserve.
Even though Berto was beaten, and Mayweather was seemingly 49-0 and out, the WBC/WBA agreed with the TMT boss doing what he asked.
It was only in January that the WBC delayed. They allowed Danny Garcia to fight Robert Guerrero for the right belt.
Despite this move, their 154th class didn’t have an amazing fighter until May 2016.
Placing Mayweather as the ‘Champion in Recess’ for both divisions, Jermell Charlo defeated John Jackson for the championship.
According to the WBA, the ‘super’ belt at 154 lay until January 2017. Erislandy Lara finally won the title of Yuri Foreman.
Two months later, Keith Thurman won the ‘super’ belt in the long-awaited unification with Garcia.
Mayweather will go on to defeat Pacquiao. However, we never got to re-engage.
