By Sam Volz: The WBC ordered Teofimo Lopez and Sandor Martin to fight for the second position for the 140-lb title with this group.
The first must be Jose Ramirez, who will get dibs on the fight Regis Prograis vs. Jose Zepeda fight. Those two are fighting for the WBA lightweight title on November 26.
Considering that the former heavyweight unified champion Teofimo (17-1, 13 KOs) is preparing to challenge the WBO 140-lb champion Josh Taylor, he is unlikely to waste his time fighting the tough Sandor Martin (40-2, 13 KOs).
With a title eliminator with the WBC being his second, that’s just another reason why Teofimo won’t mind going this route.
The third reason is that Martin is all wrong for Teofimo because he is a slick fighter who can do to him what George Kambosos Jr did in 2021.
Teofimo, 25, fights Jose ‘Sniper’ Pedraza on December 10 on ESPN at Madison Square Garden in New York. Even this fight could be difficult for Teofimo because Pedraza has a lot of skills and experience, and it can be said that he is mentally stronger than him.
Spain’s Martin, 29, defeated Mikey Garcia in 2021, sending the former four-division world champion into retirement. Teofimo is too weak mentally to take on a fighter like Sandor, and there’s very little chance that High Rank would ever let Teo fight a man like that.
There is a question mark as to whether Teofimo will win at 140 because he owes his previous victory over his opponents when he was competing at 135.
In other words, Teofimo is what some boxing fans call a ‘heavy,’ Now that he is on 140 of the fights that are close to him, he has to find another way to win.
High Rank could have a useless dead weight on their hands if they let Teofimo fight Sandor and get defeated.
This will be two unheralded fighters who beat Teofimo, and this will mark the Top Rank they need to jettison it pronto
There would be no point in Top Rank keeping Teofimo with their promotion if he loses to Sandor or Jose Pedraza. After the way Teofimo did in his last fight at 140 against Pedro Campa last August, it was clear that he wasn’t going far at lightweight.
