By Sam Volz: Vasyl Lomachenko said he enjoyed his fight with Shakur Stevenson years ago at 126 and 130. Lomachenko said Stevenson was a great fighter, who competed in the 2016 Olympics.
Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) said that when he sparred Ryan Garcia, it was only three rounds, and he was only a child. Loma said he didn’t know who Ryan was when he came into the gym for a few rounds of sparring.
Now, Lomachenko says that Ryan has grown up and is different from the one he sparred with.
Lomachenko fights this month against undefeated Jamaine Ortiz (16-0-1, 8 KOs) in the 12th round on ESPN on October 29 at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Ortiz is coming off a 10th round unanimous decision win over former WBO featherweight champion Jamel Herring, and is expected to give Lomachenko a tough fight. Loma has not seen action since last December when he defeated Richard Commey.
“I’ve fought Shakur in an interesting session, but I’ve never fought Devin Haney,” Vasyl Lomachenko told Fighthype tonight. “I can’t describe. He’s a good boxer, a good boxer, a very technical boxer, and it was a good sparring session,” Lomachenko said of Shakur.
“When I spent time with him, he was 126 and 130 pounds. Now he’s bigger. I think it has a lot of power. So now it’s going to be very interesting.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Lomachenko said when asked if Stevenson did well in his last fight against Robson Conceicao. “For me, it’s more interesting to spar with Shakur,” Lomachenko said when asked to compare sparring with Shakur to Ryan Garcia.
“I broke with him five or six times and with Ryan Garcia only three times. That’s it. When I broke with Ryan Garcia, I didn’t know him. I planned my next fight and he came into my gym We skipped two rounds, that’s it.
“Then I broke up with Shakur. I know about him. I know he was an Olympic silver medalist. I know he understands boxing, so that’s good. Now, we’re more professional; now, we have more experience. .Now it’s different,” said Lomachenko when asked to discuss Ryan Garcia’s promotion.
“Now, he is like a professional boxer. When I broke up with Ryan Garcia, he was a kid. He now has the power and skill of a professional athlete, speed, and IQ. Same with Gervonta Davis.
“I am very confident, very good because I have a goal; I want to be undisputed world champion. Now I’m close to my next chance. I have my next fight on October 29th in New York.
“If it really happens to me, I hope we can arrange a fight with the winner of Kambosos and Haney,” said Lomachenko.
