After her fight with Amanda Serrano in April, Katie Taylor is looking to end the year on a high note. The undisputed lightweight champion defended her title against Karen Carabajal on October 29.
The fight was fought at the SSE stadium in London.
It’s been a good year for women’s boxing. Taylor and Serrano blew the roof off Madison Square Garden, while Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall did the same in London’s O2 Arena. Having become a heavyweight champion since winning the WBA title in 2017, Taylor has defended the lightweight gold 13 times.
Some consider Taylor “GWOAT” (Greatest Woman of All Time), while others would say The Shield, the current two-time middleweight champion, is. Taylor has no interest in competing and instead admires all of women’s boxing.

“I will not say [the rankings] absolutely encouraged me,” Taylor told the PA news agency, via Yahoo Sports. “I think we’re both just doing our own thing, and I’m trying to be the best that I can be, and she’s trying to be the best that she can be, and we’re both making a big impact in the world of boxing. and amazing.
“I think some of the biggest battles we’ve seen this year have been myself [Amanda] Serrano, Claressa Shields, and Savannah Marshall a few weeks ago, which was amazing. It’s been an amazing few months for women’s boxing, and I’m happy to be a part of it.”
Taylor defended her title against Carabajal, a veteran featherweight. After losing the WBO heavyweight title to Rose Volante in 2017, Carabajal is 5-1 in her last six fights. She lost to Sarah Mahfoud in 2020 for the interim IBF title, and has since won two in a row. In May, she defeated Debora Anahi Dionicius for the interim WBO lightweight title.
