Richard Torrez may not be the biggest heavyweight, but he is determined to make an impact.

The Olympic silver medalist made his fourth straight match against Ahmed Hefny Sky Sports early Sunday morning this week.

It has taken him four rounds – in total – to win his three bouts so far and the 23-year-old American is aiming to show similar aggression in his next fight.

Richard Torrez Jr wasted little time as he stunned Roberto Zavala Jr in the first round and forced a stoppage.

“I see red when I get in the ring,” he said Sky Sports. “My father [his trainer] he wants to say that I am a fool on a leash and until he tells me to back off, he releases me.

“He has no control over me now, so I’m leaving.”

Outside the ring, Torrez is no exception. But it changes once the bell rings.

“Boxing gives me an outlet where I can be myself outside the ring and I don’t need to be taken away. I can release all that energy and anger and malice in the ring,” he said.

“I think my speed, my composure, my tenacity in the ring is almost indescribable. I almost have to slow that down to get my skill level back up.”

“I think I’ve always had some power, I’ve got pop. But I’m not going to say I’m Deontay Wilder, I’m not going to say I have that thunderous shot that can kill anybody. But I will say this. If one punch doesn’t hit you , the second, third or fourth will do and he will bring change,” he said.

“I think this is the main difference between me and other heavyweights. Some people go for this kick and I hit you with panic.”

The method works for him. Not only did it take him all the way to a silver medal in Tokyo, he provided a quick but successful run as a competitor.

He wants this boxing trip to take him to the UK. “My father used to call us bandits, we went from town to town looking for a fight,” he laughed.

Olympic gold medalist Richard Torrez is definitely baptized as a great fighter

“Anywhere Top Rank [his promoter] he wants me to go, wherever everyone wants me to go, I will go. I will fight in the cities, I will fight in the backyard and I will fight wherever you want me to.

Torrez aims to reach the top of the American heavyweight division. “This is a place I definitely want to be and I will be there soon. But right now I’m not worried about the position, I’m not worried about anything like that. I’m worried about my next fight and going out . and there he is performing,” he said.

“One of the reasons why I signed with Top Rank is because of the way they build their fighters. They don’t just build fighters, they build legends,” he said. “I want to be a hero in this game.

“I want to be known throughout the boxing arena in the next year and in the next three years to be known in every house.”

Richard Torrez boxes on the Vasily Lomachenko vs Jamaine Ortiz card, live on Sky Sports at 1am on Sunday.
