Natasha Jonas aims to complete a remarkable year on Saturday against Marie-Eve Dicaire at Manchester Stadium.
It was there that Jonas began her rapid rise to the world stage when she captured the WBO title in February. The Liverpudlian established herself as a heavyweight heavyweight when she knocked out Patricia Berghult last September to unify the WBO and WBC belts.
This weekend, live Sky Sportstakes on IBF 154lb champion Dicaire in a bid to win her third championship belt in 2022.
Jonas knows that victory will set her up for a big year in 2023. But Dicaire will be dangerous.
“There’s nothing that’s going to stop me from winning on Saturday night,” said the Canadian. “I’m a natural 154 (lbs), so obviously we have the weight and height advantage… It’s not our first fight at 154 so obviously we’re not taking it lightly.
But she concluded by saying, “I am bigger and stronger and I will take advantage of this.”
“She’s in the middle of her life, but so am I.”
This battle was the end of it all for Jonas as well. “I just focus on what’s in front of me,” said the Liverpudlian. “It’s been a busy year, thank you, I’m grateful, I just want to end it with a bang.
“For the first time in a long time I enjoyed this camp,” she said. “For this camp, it’s been really fun because I’ve learned and added things to my resume, and I want to go out and show it on Saturday.”
Both are champions and their fight on Saturday will decide who is the greatest heavyweight in the world. “It was number one and number two and it tied the score,” Jonas said. “This will prove to everyone, not just me, that I am at the top of the division.”
It was such an event, a women’s world title fight that headlined the show, that Dicaire always wanted to be a part of.
“Now here we are the main event,” said the IBF list. “A girl dreamed of this and now it has come true.”
The main support for their world war is Dalton Smith’s impressive British title defense against Kaisee Benjamin.
“We’re in a good fight,” Smith said. “We’re in the boxing business. Anyone who gets hit with an eight-ounce glove, you’re going to get hurt.”
But he added, “What’s happening is that Kaisee will get more hits than me but it’s a fight…”
“I have what it takes to beat him,” Benjamin promised. “I always wanted to be in big fights.
“100 percent it’s going to be my toughest test and I’m going to be his toughest test so it’s a fight or a lie.”
Watch Jonas vs Dicaire this Saturday live on Sky Sports Stadium from 7pm and Sky Sports Main Event at 10pm.
